"Art is coming face to face with yourself."
Jackson Pollock

Imagine working when what you produce is a virtual mirror of who you are that day. If we are to believe and practice that, then our art reflects who and what we are/were when involved in its creation and realization. We each change daily. Nowhere is this more evident than when looking at an artists' work from an extended period of time.

As an artist, I photograph to learn about myself as well as the world.

"The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery."
Francis Bacon

"The responsibility of the artist is not to reproduce the visible, but to make it visible."
Paul Klee

Mysteries abound, whether personal or global. But, how does one reconcile these two quotes? Scholars have often said that the more answers we get, the more questions we have. Perhaps it's as simple as making the mystery visible and allowing the viewer to make their own personal interpretation. It is, after all, a subjective decision.

"It is art that makes life, makes interest, makes importance... and I know of no substitute whatever for the force and beauty of its process."
Henry James

To pursue it means to live with eyes and mind open to everything... people, philosophies and politics, religions, and failings - especially one's own. It's hard and it's enriching. If we can, and I do believe this, live our lives artfully, intentionally and with art, then we enrich ourselves as well as our society.

"Life without industry is guilt. Industry without Art is brutality."
John Ruskin
